IRL AEK-971

Hailing from Russia, the AEK-971 was designed as a replacement for older AK models, but failed to secure the production contract when the AN-94 came into play. The AEK-971 was still manufactured by peacekeeping forces, and a limited number of the weapons ended up in soldiers’ hands.
  — Item Description

The AEK-971 is an Assault Rifle released along with the Operation:Death Row Update (16/8/2012).

Overview

This weapon is similar to the AK-74U. It improves slightly in accuracy and recoil.

The weapon is a weak 3-hit kill to a strong 4 hit kill with a medium amount of damage dropoff for assault rifles. It is stronger then the average assault rifle,as the 3 shot range is consistent enough to reliably get 3 hit kills up to a certain range. The maximum range is consistent with the average assault rifle, firing just as far before the bullets cease to hit at all.

The weapon has a below average rate of fire. This combined with the high maximum spread may make close quarters combat difficult to perform,as the low rate of fire will lower the amount of fire being sprayed, and the high maximum spread will lower the accuracy of the shots that are sprayed, making the rate of fire a liability at close ranges.

The weapon's crosshair spread is very tight for assault rifles. on the first shot standing still,it is a bulls-eye,but it does increase faster then other assault rifles during sustained fire, and it does reset noticeably slower, making longer bursts harder to pull off before the weapon becomes inaccurate. The weapon's maximum crosshair spread is significantly larger then average, and coupled with the lower then average rate of fire, makes the weapon difficult to use at closer ranges.

The recoil will cause the weapon to kick up for the first 2 shots, then it will drift either left or right diagonally, changing direction every 5 shots after the initial. This makes it easier to tap fire with the weapon,as the recoil is somewhat predictable. It also makes small bursts of automatic fire viable,as the recoil will not throw the weapon off target.

As with the AK-74U, tap rifing with an optic at longer ranges copes with the recoil and spread while taking advantage of the high accuracy.

In closer ranges, burst or automatic fire should be considered.
